Invisalign Q & A

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign works very similarly to traditional wire-and-bracket orthodontic braces, except no visible devices are necessary. Instead, Invisalign relies on clear, nearly invisible durable plastic aligners to help shift and move your teeth.

During your Invisalign treatment, you wear clear aligners all day — at least 20-22 hours per day. Your aligners put mild pressure on your teeth and encourage them to move into a properly aligned formation. Every 1-2 weeks, you start using the next set of aligners in your package.

What does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign is a top-requested orthodontic treatment for both teens and adults because aligners are virtually undetectable. Your Invisalign package from the office of Yelena Shapiro DDS is personalized for your smile and your desired outcome. Dr. Shapiro can use Invisalign aligners to correct:

  • Overbite
  • Crowding
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps and spaces between teeth

If you have minor-to-moderate misalignment issues, chances are, Invisalign could be your solution. Dr. Shapiro evaluates your teeth and looks at digital X-ray images to determine if Invisalign is right for you and to let you know about how long your Invisalign plan will take.

Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign causes little-to-no discomfort. Because you won’t have sharp brackets or wires rubbing against the insides of your cheeks, you won’t have to worry about mouth sores or discomfort.

But Invisalign treatments do still move teeth around, so mild gum soreness and tenderness is normal. These minor issues usually only occur for the first few days after you start a new set of aligners. Dr. Shapiro can help you learn to manage any discomfort you may experience.

When will I notice results with Invisalign?

Within a few weeks! Many of Dr. Shapiro’s Invisalign patients report that they start noticing gradual improvements in their smiles within as little as 3-4 weeks. An entire Invisalign treatment plan usually takes about 12-18 months to complete and you experience ongoing improvements along the way.
